Our Railways - Colfax Rail Museum

I must say I was astonished while visiting the Colfax Railroad Museum in Dunn County. Outside there is a variety of rollingstock, including locomotives, dining cars, freight cars, and my favorite, the caboose. Inside there is a large assortment of railroad items, as you’ll see shortly.

Ben Jones highlights the museum in his article, “There’s A Little-Known, Fascinating Train Park In Wisconsin And You’ll Want To Visit,” published by Only in Your State on July 29, 2022. Jones notes that the current building for the museum “was built in 1914-1915 out of sandstone that was quarried nearby.”

A storm passed through in  1958. A tornado damaged the railroad station. and it remained abandoned for some time. This photo of the damaged station was shown on the museum’s Facebook page.

My understanding is Herbert F Sakalaucks Jr bought it in February 2006 for $500. Then the Village of Colfax bought it in July 2008. It is officially known as the Colfax Railroad Museum, Inc. It is a not-for-profit.
