Nelson is a rural village in Buffalo County. Nelson is located on the Great River Road. It sits at the lower end of Lake Pepin, the widest part of the Mississippi River in Wisconsin. The nearby Chippewa River spills into the Mississippi River above Nelson and forms a massive sandbar that forms Lake Pepin. The Nelson-Trevino Bottoms State Natural area is also here. The Nelson Cheese Factory, part of the old Nelson Creamery, draws a lot of visitors and shoppers. It’s also a great place to eat. It is a “must visit!”
Nelson Cheese Factory
The Nelson Cheese Factory was known as the Nelson Creamery. It is located in Hwy 35 S along the Mississippi River. It had been making cheese for over 100 years. It no longer does that, but instead sells cheese from throughout the state, fine wines, a gourmet selection of foods, and arguably best of all, ice cream!
Furthermore, it is a relaxing and refreshing stop for lunch in the family dining room. You can dine inside or, weather permitting, outside. The benches out front are frequently occupied by travelers devouring their favorite ice cream.
The Deli and wine shop inside are first rate - masterful!
Between the two of them, one can get lost for quite a while.
The dining room was quite a pleasant surprise. It is spacious, warmed by a wonderful fire, and menu was fun: hot and cold sandwiches, soups and salads and on certain days, 10 inch personal pizzas, along with your favorite wine, beer or cold drinks. Quite frankly, dining here can be romantic!
As indicated earlier, the Nelson Cheese Factory is a “must-stop.”
There is more to the village. Recall you are in Wisconsin.
J&J BBQ Grandpa’s Saloon is quite a complex in two adjacent buildings. Together they offer all the great barbecue meals for in-door dining and take-out, including bulk take-out. You can have wine, beer, or spirits, and capt it all off with ice cream.
Werner’s Top Hat Bar is Next door on one sire of J&J’s, presenting cold beer, homemade pizza, and burgers in a down-home atmosphere.
Go the other way and next door are Laura’s Treasures and Hot Rod Liquor.
Laura’s Treasures is a place for home decor, signs, frames and photos, florals, novelties and much more, a fun shopping experience.
Hot Rod Liquors carries craft beers, wines and spirits. It is family owned and operated.
