Sheboygan city is in Sheboygan County and is the county seat. It is known variously as “Spirit on the Lake” and the “Malibu of the Midwest” because of its location on the west side of Lake Michigan.
The city and its nearby surroundings are great places to explore. Sheboygan has a lot to do: gardens, the arts, nature centers, museums, lighthouses, and numerous shops and restaurants. Plan on spending some time here.
It is seen as a freshwater haven and a fisherman’s sunrise glory.
The city is on Lake Michigan. The Vacationidea Staff in 2022 said,
“the city of Sheboygan is a charming coastal community that offers an enchanting mix of historical and cultural attractions and outdoor recreational activities. From museums, galleries, cultural events, and festivals to white sandy beaches, pristine golf courses, and the beautiful waters of Lake Michigan …
“World-class sailing and premier charter fishing on the lake, a historic downtown district that boasts an array of unique shopping, dining, and entertainment …
“head into the great outdoors at one of the 34 beautiful parks.”
Kohler-Andrae State Park is here, just a few miles south of the city. Put on your walking shoes. The landscapes are natural, and there is an array of activities “including camping, hiking, mountain biking, boating, fishing, sailing, kayaking, swimming, and relaxing on the beach. “
I walked around the Kohler Dunes State Natural Area. I was startled to see the dunes. They are something to behold. There is a boardwalk to help climb up and down the dunes. Walking in the sand will challenge your physical fitness!
I also visited Whistling Straits Golf Course, a 36-hole links-style golf course on Lake Michigan, carved into the dunes. It replicates ancient seaside links courses of Great Britain and Ireland. I am not a golfer. But if I were, I would be awed by the challenges presented.
The Golf Course has hosted major PGA exempts including the PGA Championships, US Senior Open and Ryder Cup. the clubhouse is magnificent .
